Once light crosses a wall, every defect on it shows. That makes preparation most of the work. We sand the surfaces, fill the holes and cracks, and seal anything that would bleed through afterwards. Drywall repairs, bare wood and water stains all get primed before colour goes near them. Then two full coats, cut in by hand. You should see straight lines at the ceiling, no roller marks, and no drips down the wall.

Before any of that, your furniture moves to the centre of the room under new plastic sheeting, and the floors go under drop cloths. Working around a family is normal for us. It does take longer, because everything gets set up and packed down again each day, so if you can be out, or the house is empty between owners, the same job moves faster and costs less. Worth raising at the quote. Either way, tools and paint are put away every evening so children and pets can't get into anything.

Two full coats is the standard here. We'll say so when your colour is moving far enough to need a third, since a deep wall going to white is a different job from a refresh in the same shade. Sometimes the honest answer is one coat: near enough the same colour, a premium paint that covers properly, and walls needing almost no repair. We'd sooner tell you that than sell you a second.
