Trim sits at eye level and catches side light along its whole length, so every nail hole, dent and brush mark reads. The preparation is most of the job: nail holes filled, dings made good, and the existing gloss sanded back so the new coat has something to hold onto instead of sitting on a slick surface waiting to chip.

There are two ways to finish it. Spraying gets you the closest thing to a factory finish with no brush marks at all, but everything around it has to be masked off properly, which takes time and makes the room unusable while it happens. Hand-brushing needs far less masking and lets you keep living around the work. A close eye will read it as hand-applied. We'll tell you which one the room warrants and what each costs. Doors can come off their hinges for a better finish, and they need time to cure before they're closed against their stops.

Trim goes on after the walls, so the cut line belongs to the trim and not the roller. Two full coats is the standard, and we'll tell you where a third earns its place.
